Industry Primers for Case Interviews
Every industry has its own words, and they point to the money: the primers connect each word to a branch of your framework and a metric.
Pick a primer
- Retail and consumer goodsMargins are often thin, so a point or two on volume or on the cost of the goods decides the year.
- Airlines and transportA plane, truck or train costs nearly the same to run full or empty, and margins are thin, often single digits.
- HealthcareThe patient receives the care, but someone else usually pays: name the player, and who pays it, first.
- Software and techSoftware costs a lot to build and very little to deliver to one more customer, so the case usually turns on winning and keeping customers.
- Industrials and manufacturingA factory is a large fixed cost that pays off only when it runs full and makes good parts.
- Financial servicesMost financial firms earn a spread or a fee, and lose money when risk goes wrong: revenue and risk sit side by side.
How to use the primers
What's new here: every industry has its own words, and they point to the money.
- The words tell you how the business makes money, often before anyone says it
- Using them correctly shows you understand the business, not just the framework
- They point to the branch of the tree that carries the weight
- You never need to recite them; you need to recognize them and know what they mean
Level 2 taught you how to answer each part of a case. The primers add the client's world: how each industry makes money, its key metrics and the questions its cases ask. Pick the primer for the industries you expect.
