Most math mistakes in a case are not hard arithmetic. They are a zero in the wrong place, a monthly number mixed with a yearly one, or the right answer that never gets a so what.
The five steps, every time
- Build your equation first: what you are solving for, one setup per calculation.
- Lay out the numbers, with units: per unit, per year; never monthly mixed with yearly.
- Calculate one line at a time, out loud, each line labelled.
- Sanity check: roughly the right size? Does it lean the way it should?
- The so what: against the client's goal: what we now know, and what is next.
